Michael Flynn pleads guilty to lying to the FBI
Former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn has pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about his communication with former Russia Ambassador to the U.S. Sergey Kislyak during the 2016 Presidential Election and is now cooperating with Special Counsel Robert Mueller in the Russian investigation.
The New York Times reported that Flynn was not truthful with the FBI when he discussed his role in getting the Russians not to retaliate to sanctions the Obama Administration imposed.
Michael Flynn asked Sergey Kislyak to convince Russian President Vladimir Putin not to retaliate to the sanctions.
Putin responded by inviting American diplomats and their children over to the Kremlin. Donald Trump praised Vladimir Putin for what Trump saw as Putin’s superior political savy compared to the political savy of then President Obama.
There have been several questions about Flynn, who also served during the Obama Administration, and his Russian connections.
President Obama fired Flynn due to his insubordination. Acting Attorney General Sally Yates also warned Trump Administration officials about Flynn and his foreign connections.
In response to her warnings, Yates was fired. Trump Administration officials were dismissive of anyone from the Obama Administration warning them about Flynn because the folks in Trump Administration thought the warnings were personal due to President Obama firing Flynn.
Trump often said that he believed Flynn, who was one of his early supporters, “is a good man.”
Less than two months after firing Yates for sounding the alarm about Flynn, Flynn was forced to resign after he “lied” to Vice President Mike Pence about his discussions with foreign officials.
Flynn’s resignation made him the shortest serving National Security Adviser, 24-days, in the country’s history.
Michael Flynn’s decision to cooperate with Mueller does not come as a surprise. As early as September of this year, Mueller dropped hints that he was looking closely at the connection between Donald Trump Jr.’s June 2016 meeting with Russian officials and Michael Flynn’s resignation and President Donald Trump’s decision to fire former FBI Director James Comey who was leading the investigation into Russia’s meddling into the 2016 Presidential Election.
The clearest sign that Mueller was looking closely at Flynn came this week after it was reported that Flynn’s lawyers decided to stop speaking with Donald Trump’s lawyers about the Russian investigation.
Donald Trump has consistently denied any knowledge about any Russian collusion with members of his campaign.
However, Trump’s denials have fallen on deaf ears due to his admission to Kislyak that he let Comey go because of the Russian investigation and Trump’s denial that Putin meddled in the election.
Michael Flynn along with former Trump Campaign adviser George Papadopoulos are two former officials within the Trump Campaign who are now working with Mueller in the Russian investigation.
